MITA Presents 2016 “Lifetime Achievement Award” to Congressman Pitts


Lifetime Achievement Award Recognizes Pitts’ Record of Championing Medical Innovation, Bolstering Job Creation and Improving Patient Care

Washington, D.C. – The Medical Imaging & Technology Alliance (MITA) today presented Congressman Joe Pitts (R-PA) with the 2016 “Lifetime Achievement Award” for championing medical innovation, bolstering job creation within the medical technology industry and improving patient care during his tenure in Congress.

“Congressman Pitts’ leadership in Congress has helped enhance patients’ access to life-saving treatments and foster the next generation of diagnostics and therapies,” said MITA Board Chairman Nelson Mendes, president and CEO of Ziehm Imaging Inc. “From his efforts to reform the Food and Drug Administration’s approval process to his leadership in suspending the medical device tax, we are pleased to honor Congressman Pitts for his years of support for the medical technology sector.”

Congressman Pitts represents Pennsylvania’s 16th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives, first taking office in 1997 and serving on a wide range of subcommittees in his 19 years of service. He is currently a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, where he chairs the Subcommittee on Health and also serves on the Subcommittees on Energy and Power and the Environment and the Economy. He plans to retire at the end of his tenth term. Last year, Congressman Pitts voted in favor of a two-year suspension of the medical device tax which went into effect on December 31, 2015.

Congressman Pitts has been an important advocate for medical technology jobs in the state of Pennsylvania, where medical imaging technology companies deliver $2.8 billion in economic activity and employ nearly 12,000 people.1
