MITA Responds to New American Cancer Society Guidelines for Breast Cancer Screening


Washington, D.C. – The Medical Imaging & Technology Alliance (MITA) today issued the following response to new breast cancer screening guidelines published by the American Cancer Society (ACS).

“Mammography is essential for early detection and treatment of breast cancer and we are encouraged that ACS sees the value of this screening tool to save lives through early detection,” said Patrick Hope, MITA’s Executive Director. “We are, however, concerned by the discord between the various sets of screening guidelines available to women and their physicians, as the disparity between the recommendations may create confusion, or worse, discourage women from seeking appropriate screenings.”

Among other changes to previous guidance, the ACS guidelines now recommend that women with an average risk of breast cancer should begin receiving yearly mammograms by age 45, and may switch to biennial mammograms beginning at age 55.

The American College of Radiology (ACR), the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI), and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) continue to recommend annual mammograms beginning at age 40, while the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) currently recommends only biennial mammograms beginning at age 50. If passed, H.R. 3339, the Protecting Access to Lifesaving Screenings (PALS) Act, would place a two year moratorium on implementation of the final USPSTF recommendations, allowing more time for alignment on breast cancer screening guidelines and ensuring continued access to lifesaving breast cancer screening without coverage restrictions or burdensome cost-sharing.
