MITA Presents 2016 “Innovation Award” to Congressman Flores

Innovation Award Recognizes Members of Congress for Championing Medical Innovation, Bolstering Job Creation and Improving Patient Care through Medical Device Tax Suspension

Washington, D.C. – The Medical Imaging & Technology Alliance (MITA) today presented Congressman Bill Flores (R-TX) with a 2016 “Innovation Award” for championing medical innovation, bolstering job creation within the medical technology industry and improving patient care through his leadership in suspending the medical device tax.

“We applaud the important step Congressman Flores has taken to promote economic growth and job creation through his support for the medical technology industry,” said MITA Board Chairman Nelson Mendes, president and CEO of Ziehm Imaging Inc. “Congressman Flores is bringing hope to patients who depend on new life-saving technologies that arise from important research and development.”

The MITA 2016 “Innovation Awards” recognize members of Congress who have demonstrated outstanding, ongoing efforts to promote innovation within the medical technology industry and improve patient care.

Congressman Flores serves as Chairman of the Republican Study Committee (RSC) and sits on the House Energy and Commerce Committee. During his first two terms in the 112th and 113th Congresses, he served on the House Budget, Veterans’ Affairs, and Natural Resources committees. Texas’s medical technology industry employs 16,600 people and contributes $10.5 billion to the state economy.

The American medical technology industry is a true economic success story, providing jobs for more than 400,000 people, paying out salaries that are 40 percent more than the national average ($58,000 vs. $42,000), and investing nearly $10 billion in research and development annually to advance patient care in the United States and around the world. The industry is fueled by innovative companies, the majority of which are small businesses, with 80 percent of companies having fewer than 50 employees.
