Medicare Advisors Doubt Benefits Of Low-Dose CT For Lung Cancer Screening


Despite MedCAC’s doubts about low-dose CT tests for cancer screening, that for high-risk individuals, “[LDCT] has the potential to prevent thousands of lung cancer deaths per year,” the Medical Imaging & Technology Alliance said in an April 30 statement. One of the speakers at the MedCAC meeting, Ella Kazerooni, professor of radiology at the University of Michigan, told “The Gray Sheet,” that she was disappointed in the way the meeting was run, because panelists “were not allowed to consider existing quality standards, professional society guidelines, or programs in place” to track and control any excessive radiation during screenings. Also, Kazerooni noted, “There were no radiologist on the panel.”
