Curbing Breast Cancer Screening Disparities

Breast cancer deaths are preventable through regular screenings, however the disease remains the second leading cause of death among women in the U.S. Making matters worse, there are significant disparities in screening rates among African-American and white women, leading to added mortality (40 percent higher for African-American women). To help address this disparity, WellFlorida is working with the American Cancer Society to train female parishioners at African-American churches on “how to prevent breast cancer through mammography and routine self-exams.”
