A bipartisan group of 10 House representatives sent a letter to leaders of both parties urging them to oppose proposals reportedly under consideration by the super committee that would cut payments to imaging equipment makers. Several groups have proposed to require prior authorization of imaging services and to change a aspect of the payment formula that would cut rates.
The lawmakers emphasize that advanced imaging services is one of the slowest growing sectors in Medicare. They cite research results from the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission that puts advanced imaging growth at one-tenth of 1 percent. “Clearly, the spending curve has already been bent for medical imaging services,” they write.
