The medical device excise tax that is set to take effect in 2013 will harm U.S. competitiveness and cost thousands of jobs, a health care industry group said Sept. 7.
A new study examining the 2.3 percent excise tax on medical devices that is estimated to cost the industry $2.7 billion annually found that the tax could cost the United States 43,000 jobs in the medical device industry. States with the most workers in the industry like Minnesota, Indiana, Massachusetts, California, and Colorado are likely to feel the biggest impact, said Diana Furchtgott-Roth, co-author of the study and senior fellow with the conservative Manhattan Institute, in a conference call with reporters Sept. 7.
