MITA supports efforts of the U.S. Joint Commission to protect patients from unnecessary medical radiation
The Medical Imaging & Technology Alliance (MITA) supports efforts by the U.S. Joint Commission and others to protect patients from unnecessary medical radiation.
“As a long-time supporter of criteria to determine the appropriateness of imaging procedures, certification of imaging equipment operators and accreditation of imaging facilities, MITA welcomes the Commission’s recommendations and encourages the use of physician-derived best practice guidelines to ensure the safe and appropriate use of medical imaging technologies,” said Dave Fisher, executive director of MITA. “We will continue to work with stakeholders to advance these policies and ensure that they are properly implemented, so all patients have access to the right scan at the right time.”
MITA and imaging manufactures have been at the forefront of reducing the amount of radiation associated with imaging procedures through innovative technologies and new features such as the MITA CT Dose Check Initiative and appropriateness criteria, which are used to guide physicians in making optimal imaging and treatment decisions for their patients. MITA is also a strong supporter of certification of equipment operators, accreditation of imaging facilities, uniform dose recording standards for imaging data and standardized reporting of medical errors associated with imaging and radiation therapy equipment.
